Michael Braun, Director of Sustainability Engineering at Lillibridge Healthcare Services in Chicago, Illinois, has been selected by CRE Insight Journal as one of the 10 to Watch in commercial real estate. The CRE Insight Journal 10 to Watch program recognizes the commercial real estate industry’s top early career professionals and showcases how emerging professionals are shaping the real estate industry through a variety of career pathways.
At Lillibridge, Michael has led numerous sustainability and efficiency projects that have resulted in measurable impact. He led energy efficiency upgrades across more than 50 Lillibridge properties, resulting in a 5 percent reduction in energy consumption within his first year. He has also played a central role in increasing Lillibridge’s ENERGY STAR certifications, increasing the number of certified properties from 43 in 2022 to 66 in 2023. This year, he has been working to submit 75 properties, which would represent a nearly 75 percent increase in ENERGY STAR certified properties over three years. He has also developed more than 300 net-zero roadmaps for outpatient medical properties, supporting Lillibridge’s goal of reducing carbon emissions through capital projects and detailed action plans.
Reflecting on his role, Michael said, “Ultimately, my work at Lillibridge has been focused on driving a culture of energy efficiency and operational excellence. Through targeted energy projects, certification growth, and the development of innovative strategies like electrification, I’ve contributed to reducing our environmental impact while positioning the company as a leader in sustainability. The progress we’ve made not only benefits Lillibridge but also serves as a model for how the real estate industry can embrace sustainability to drive positive change.”
Michael’s community impact extends beyond Lillibridge. He dedicated five years to mentoring a young man through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Milwaukee, helping him improve academically and overcome personal challenges. Michael continues to stay in touch with his mentee, highlighting the lasting power of mentorship and the profound difference a steady source of support can make.
Michael’s influence also extends to the broader commercial real estate industry. He has spoken at a variety of CRE events such as the 2024 Building Owners and Managers Association International Medical Real Estate Conference, where he served as a panelist, and at various ENERGY STAR and Conservice webinars. These platforms allow him to share Lillibridge’s successes and contribute to important conversations around sustainability in real estate.
On the potential impact of real estate, Michael said, “Real estate is not just about buildings, but about creating environments where people and communities can thrive. By adopting sustainable practices and focusing on the social value of spaces, the industry can have a lasting positive impact on both the environment and the people who inhabit these spaces. This holistic approach ensures that real estate development is a force for good, benefiting society and the planet alike.”
