Fred Gordy, National Practice Lead – Building Cybersecurity at Michael Baker International, received the 2024 Thought Leadership Award from CRE Insight Journal. Michael Baker International is a leading provider of engineering and consulting services, including design, planning, architectural, environmental, construction and program management. Fred is a smart building industry expert and thought leader with 23 years of experience in secure control system development and implementation for Fortune 500 companies throughout the United States and abroad. He is also one of the first in the smart building industry to address the inherent risk that control system technology poses.
Fred has written and contributed to more than 100 articles on building control cybersecurity with industry magazines and the Wall Street Journal, CNBC, and Healthcare publications. His articles have been featured internationally. In addition to publishing articles, for almost a decade Fred has led control system cybersecurity educational programs and has been a passionate speaker and teacher on building control cybersecurity.
In recent years, Fred has developed cybersecurity assessment methodologies and tools based on The International Society of Automation (ISA) 62443 and cybersecurity and infrastructure security control systems. He currently serves as a technical advisor for Building Cyber Security, a non-profit focused on promoting the adoption of technology, processes, and training to reduce cyber risk. Additionally, Fred is a technical advisor for ISA and UL/TIA SPIRE Smart Building Assessment. He is a CS2AI Senior Fellow and recently began collaborating with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency on the Critical Infrastructure Commercial Facility Sector.
Fred has collaborated with CRE Insight Journal extensively, providing thought leadership for resources on topics such as Dealing with Remote Attacks in Cybersecurity, Cybersecurity and You: Frameworks for CRE Webinar, Cybersecurity and CRE: Building Cybersecurity Framework Showcase, and CRE and Cybersecurity: Preparing for the Future. Additionally, his “Breaking Down Building System Threats and Cybersecurity for CRE” series gives real-world examples of incidents regarding cybersecurity. This series includes 92 Days to Recover, Connectivity Lost to Over 100 Buildings, and Scans and Printers. Furthermore, Fred contributed to the 2022 CRE Insight Journal Proptech and Cybersecurity Guide, which equipped real estate industry professionals with resources needed to effectively lead their organizations and properties into the future.
